National Community Pharmacists Association

Diabetes Accreditation Standards-Practical Applications (DASPA)

DASPA is a new program designed specifically to expand access for patients while offering community pharmacies a path to reimbursement for diabetes management.

Establishing an accredited diabetes education program through a community pharmacy can be a rewarding venture for the pharmacist, both financially and professionally. DASPA offers community pharmacists training to expand their role into diabetes self-management education/training (DSME/T) which is eligible for payment by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for providing these valuable services to persons with diabetes.

CMS only acknowledges programs that are accredited. Accredited pharmacies are eligible to bill Part B for DSME/T services. The American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE), a CMS-approved diabetes education accrediting organization, has teamed with NCPA to bring you the DASPA program.

DASPA is a two part program, one part online and one part live, designed to introduce pharmacists to the AADE accreditation process and demonstrate how to establish and manage the business aspects of a successful program.

Please note: The online portion of the DASPA program must be completed PRIOR to attending the live portion of the program.

Section 1: Online

The online portion of DASPA is a self-paced, 6-module online course which focuses on the essential knowledge and skills needed by community pharmacists who want to enhance their ability to work with patients with diabetes. • Defining Diabetes
